East Black Bay Looking West

Black Bay is located on the far western and northern side of Lake Vermilion. The mouth of Black Bay on the south opens into the main part of the west side of Lake Vermilion, WakemUp Bay and Head-O-Lakes Bay.

Black Bay's name comes from the rusty tinge of the water from the iron ore. It is a nicely protected bay from the winds with the high land areas and trees that surround the water. The water conditions are often calm in many areas, making the bay ideal for waterskiing or fishing.

Black Bay is not very developed with a majority of the houses on the mouth of the bay and few in the northen part. A large portion of the south shore is Minnesota State Forest. Eagle's Nest Cabin is located on the far East side of the bay.
